INT. - RICK'S PSYCHIATRY OFFICE - DAY
DAVID sits across from RICK on a fancy sofa.
DAVID
Last night I had that dream again, the one where I'm at the
bus stop, and the bus driver slows down sees me then speeds
up, and drives off.

DREAM SEQUENCE
EXT. - BUS STOP IN SUBURBS - DAY
We see David running after the bus as it speeds away.
DAVID
Wait, I'm going to be late for my first appointment!
CUT TO:
INT. - BUS - CONT.
JACK looks in the rearview, and sees David running then slowing down to a stop. Jack cackles
in pleasure from his own rogue behavior. He steps on the gas to make a yellow light.
FLASH PAN back to David standing on the side of the road. SALLY pulls up in a sports car,
and a very good looking man is in the passenger seat. Sally rolls the window down.
SALLY
Get in the fucking car, I'll take you to work again!
By the way this is my lover REX.

INT. - PSYCHIATRY OFFICE - CONT.
David is sitting on the fancy sofa.
DAVID
That's when Sally woke me up. My wife can be sweet, but
not always, she hates it when I tell her about the dream, then
she gets quiet. I think she might be cheating on me, she sure has
a lot of doctor appointments.
RICK
I think your nightmares are affecting your judgment, but surely,
you jest. Have you asked?
DAVID
Yeah I jest, but seriously she won't tell me more until she knows
more, it's not like her.
RICK
How's Davey? How's it affecting him?

INT. - KITCHEN DINING ROOM - DAY
Sally is preparing breakfast, and coffee for their son DAVEY (DAVID JR.) who is eleven years old,
and her husband David. Sally hands David his coffee, and puts a bowl of cereal in front of Davey. She
sits down at the table with them, and sips her own coffee. Davey digs in to his cereal.
DAVID
I won't bring up that thing anymore.
Sally looks annoyed, and glances at Davey, then back at David, and shakes her head no.
SALLY
Take Jr. to the bus this morning, I've got an early doctors
appointment. Davey wear your coat, it's cold out.
DAVEY
Dad I want to walk myself, I'm 11, and the bus stop is right
there.
DAVID
Ok, but I'm going to keep an eye on you from the window.
Davey heads out the door, and David looks through the front window, he sees Davey get on the bus,
then turns toward Sally.
DAVID
I hope he never inherits my OCD. Speaking of I have an
early client.
SALLY
At least yours is mild, I don't even notice it. You're good
at hiding it.
Sally walks over, and hugs David, then gives him a gentle kiss.
SALLY
(hands David his lunch pail)
Your lunch, now get out of here before you miss your own
bus.
DAVID
Fill me in about your appointment later? I love you.
SALLY
I love you too. See you later.
David leaves the house, and Sally glances out the window at him, she turns around, and we see
her crying, Sally walks off screen.

We see David get on the public transportation bus. He sits up front near the driver.
MONTAGE of traveling, and stopping at a few stops. ANGLE ON David, and Jack.
DAVID
I have the same recurring dream over, and over, except it's
a different car, and different guy each time. What does it all mean?
JACK
I don't know man, you're the psychologist. Things must be pretty
heavy for you to be sharing with the bus driver. You alright?
DAVID
Oh uh yeah I'm fine. Sorry TMI probably annoying to you, and
the other riders.
JACK
Nah, no one minds. You need to vent to, fuck'em if they can't
take a joke. Besides if you got paid every time you gave out free
advice to bus riders, you'd be rich. Don't bother with the bell
here's your stop.
David walks off the bus, then stops at the bottom of the stairs, smiles, and waves for a moment.
JACK
I don't stop for you ever in any of those dreams?
DAVID
Nope.
JACK
Damn.
Jack shakes his head no, closes the bus door, and drives away.
FADE OUT.

INT. - DAVID'S PSYCHOLOGY OFFICE - DAY
STEVE sits on a large leather chair at an angle to David's line of sight. Steve is a linebacker size man,
intimidating looking in every way.
DAVID
Good morning Steve, and how are you progressing with
some of the steps I gave you?
STEVE
I tried, but I need some different advice, because after
a few steps of walking over the cracks I ran back to my house
not missing a single crack, got my sledge hammer from my
garage, then walked back to the cracks I walked over - stepped
on them, and then smashed the concrete to hell. Now I'm
paying a crew two grand to fix the neighborhood sidewalk.
So unfortunately I'm quitting therapy. I gotta pay for the damn
sidewalk.
DAVID
Well not exactly what I suggested, but I understand. Wasn't your
wife there to help you take it slow, just one or two squares to start?
STEVE
I'm not the ask the wife for assistance kinda guy. I might have to
stop driving though.
DAVID
Oh yeah, why is that?
CUT TO:
STEVE'S RECALL FLASHBACK
EXT. - STEVE'S CAR - DAY
We see Steve behind the wheel, and his wife BECKY in the front passenger seat. The car rolls to a
stop at a red light, Steve inches the car forward just enough for the front tire to sit on the white line.
BECKY
You can't keep doing this, you're going to get us a ticket.
CUT TO:
Steve pulls up to another red light, and starts to inch forward. Becky reaches her left leg over into
the gas, and break pedal area, and pushes on the break pedal, the car jerks to a stop. A cop nearby
notices, and turns on the car siren, then pulls up behind them, and the cop signals for Steve to go
to the shoulder of the road. Steve, and Becky grimace, but stay silent, and comply.

INT. - DAVID'S PSYCHOLOGY OFFICE - CONT.
DAVID
Wow, ok yeah that's new, and concerning. Times
up Steve, and uh tell you what, comeback, yeah comeback
for a few more sessions no charge. I feel like I might have not
been clear enough last time on steps, and I feel bad you got a
sidewalk reconstruction bill.
STEVE
Free? Completely?
DAVID
Yup, absolutely free. Least I can do. I'm still getting to know you,
and I'll have some better prepared advice next time.
Steve heads for the door to leave.
STEVE
Thanks Doc appreciate that.
DAVID
No not a doctor, that would be a psychiatrist, I'm just a regular
psychologist. Thank you, Steve, see you next session, bye.
Oh, you have a ride?
STEVE
Yeah, Becky is driving, and I wear a blindfold, so I don't have an
anxiety attack about the lines on the road.
DAVID
Oh. Well, we'll address that. See you later.
David closes the door behind Steve, then takes a second to take a big breath sigh.

MONTAGE of David meeting with his PATIENTS for the day.
INT. - DAVID'S OFFICE - CONT.
From David's POV
PATIENT ONE
I use to be able to get on a plane, in fact I used to like
it, but the last two years I developed claustrophobia.
Is it, because of my divorce? We used to argue on planes
whenever we went on vacation. Annoyed the shit out of the other
passengers.
PATIENT TWO
I dreamt about Stephen Colbert last night, it was so vivid.
I don't even watch late night any more, but it must mean something.
Right?
PATIENT THREE
I don't know how to take it. I keep ghosting him, I mean what do
I even say to a long-lost twin you didn't know about. I'm stressed
as hell. Why don't I care?
From Patient's POV
DAVID
The two aren't necessarily related, but I can understand why
you might think it is.
DAVID
(hand on chin)
Interesting. I think it means you admire the guy. Most of
the time dreams aren't about deeper meanings, but if you watched
him a lot in the past, but not lately, you could be just missing it.
Try going back to watching, laughter has some legitimate
health benefits.
DAVID
(puts reading glasses on, and writes on a note pad)
You know. (beat) That's a very emotionally complex situation.
We should talk about taking the right approach.
CONT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7.
CUT TO:
ANGLE ON David, and Patient four.
DAVID
Insomnia? You never mentioned that before. Did that start
recently, or have you been struggling with it for a while?
PATIENT FOUR
Recently. I googled it, and asked ChatGPT, but...
A timer's ring reverberates intermittently through the office interrupting Patient 4's train of thought.
DAVID
(smiles politely)
We'll pick this back up next week.
CUT TO:
EXT. - BUSINESS PARK BUILDING - CONT.
David is waiting at the bus stop near his office. The bus pulls up, and he gets on. He sits up front
near the driver in his usual seat, he notices it's Jack driving again, but no one talks, the mood
is somber, and quiet, and the few riders strewn about just wants to mind their own business. The
bus doors close, and the bus gets back on the road.
DAVID
Long day.
JACK
Yup, long day.
FADE OUT:

FADE IN:
INT. - DAVID/SALLY'S HOUSE - AFTERNOON
David comes in the door from work, he settles in.
DAVID
Sally? Davey? Where is everyone?
David walks into the den, and sees Sally sitting quietly, and Davey is there too. David sits next to
Sally.
DAVID
You ok?
SALLY
(tears welling)
You know all those doctor appointments I've been going to?
The biopsy was positive. I'm going to need a liver transplant.
I know I was acting like it was a mystery illness, but I couldn't
tell you until I knew for sure. I'm sorry David.
DAVEY
(tears)
Mom told me after I got home from school.
David stands, and paces erratically, he begins to cry.
DAVID
Oh my god, no no no no. You should've told me sooner.
Sally no this can't be...
SALLY
Sit down David. (beat) Please.
David sits down next to Sally, and puts his arm around her. Davey hugs them both.
FADE OUT:

FADE IN:
EXT. - COFFEE SHOP - DAY
David, and Rick are on the Patio sitting at a quaint table. They're enjoying good coffee, and treats,
but it's serious, and somber.
DAVID
I don't know what to do, I'm an emotional mess. My patients
aren't getting the best out of me since all of this.
RICK
I take it the cheating nightmares stopped since you found out.
DAVID
Just be my Dad right now.
RICK
I'm so sorry this happened. It's not fair.
DAVID
Never is. I just didn't see it coming, I miss the signs, I should've
noticed what was really happening, I'm a psychologist for Christ's
sake.
RICK
No matter how much training. No matter how much we think we
know, we can never truly know until it happens to us. Your Mom,
and I are here for all of you any time.
David gives his Dad a heartfelt knowing look while trying to fight back tears.
CUT TO:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10.
INT. - ICE CREAM SHOP - DAY
David, and Davey are in line to get ice cream. They order, get served, then walk over, and sit in a
booth.
DAVEY
Why didn't you get anything?
DAVID
I had this huge Frappuccino earlier. Grandpa says hi, and
he said Grandma Shirley misses you too, you should visit soon.
I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention.
DAVEY
I've got hand sanitizer, and masks in my coat pocket if you
want.
DAVID
(smiles)
I'll take some sanitizer. It's good to be a germaphobe these days.
How are you doing son, how's school.
DAVEY
Is mom going to die?
DAVID
(quietly)
Hey hey hey noooo of course not. There's some incredible
doctors in the world, we'll get through this just fine.
DAVEY
Yeah that's pretty much what mom said too. What if she doesn't get
a donor in time?
DAVID
Your ice cream is melting. Grab that to take on the road, it's
a beautiful Sunday eating your sundae, let's just drive around
town.
CUT TO:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11.
EXT. - TARGET PARKING LOT - CONT.
David, and Davey sit parked.
DAVID
Man this parking lot is sure empty on a Sunday afternoon.
You wanna drive?
DAVEY
You can't be serious.
DAVID
As a heart attack. Just let it idle forward, no pushing on the gas.
David grins, and they get out of the car to switch. David gives Davey a quick tutorial, then they go
forward slowly at engine idle speed.
DAVEY
Oh my God I'm doing it! This is awesome Dad. Oh man oh man.
DAVID
Turn turn turn whoa hold on get your foot off the gas, too fast.
Just let it idle there you go. Oh shit security. Ok brake brake! Stop.
Put it in park.
CONT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12.
CUT TO:
We see Jack get out of the Mall Security car, and walk up to David's car window.
JACK
Hey, David. So just because you knew this was my weekend
gig, you thought you can let your underage son illegally drive
a motor vehicle on my turf? How'd he do?
DAVID
Not too shabby.
JACK
(fist bumps Davey)
Right on. Ok switch back quick before a real cop comes by.
David, and Davey switch back.
DAVID
Thanks Jack, I owe you one.
JACK
No problem. I grew up on a farm man, I was driving at nine,
and there's no farms around here. Nice to finally meet you
Davey, and no sneaking the car out now that you're an expert.
DAVID
Jack, we're having a barbecue next weekend, come on over.
I'll get your cell tomorrow on the bus, and I'll text my address,
time.
JACK
Wow. Are we becoming actual friends? Hey, Davey you know
your dad asks me for advice sometimes, that's ironic. Rock on,
I'll be there.
FADE OUT:

FADE IN:
INT. - DAVID/SALLY HOUSE - NIGHT
David knocks on Davey's bedroom door, then walks in. Davey is already in bed for night.
DAVID
Is that my book?
DAVEY
Yeah. Getting a head start on what I want to be.
DAVID
Not the best one to start with buddy, that's mediocre at best.
I think I sold two, and your holding one of the two.
DAVEY
(smiles)
I'm only eleven so I wouldn't know the difference. Thanks Dad
for today, I had fun.
DAVID
Best Sunday, and Sundae ever, and the driving thing, don't
worry we won't get in trouble, believe it or not your mom ok'd
it. I know she's a loose cannon these days. Any way get some sleep.
Love you bud.
David leaves the room, and goes downstairs to the living room. Sally is watching a movie.
CONT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14.
CLOSE ON David sitting next to Sally on the sofa.
DAVID
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, classic my favorite movie as a kid.
SALLY
My last appointment is this Friday before the surgery next week.
At least I get to enjoy one last barbecue with family, and friends.
For a awhile I mean since my recovery takes a long time.
Remember in our younger years we joked about a threesome?
We should try it just in case I don't make it. (beat) Kidding.
DAVID
Ooooh you're dark. Very very dark. I never did tell you about my
recurring dream.
SALLY
Tell me about it.
Davey comes walking downstairs, and sits on the chair across from his parents.
DAVEY
(looking at Sally)
You're not going to die.
SALLY
Oh my God. How much did you hear? No no I'm not going
anywhere, of course I'm not going to die. I thought you...
DAVID
Ok so you just learned your mom has a dark sense of humor,
sorry about that. Ok, love you go back to bed.
SALLY
(palm to face)
I'm so sorry Davey, I don't usually joke like that, I'm not dark.
DAVID
(nods yes)
I'm sorry I never told you before son, but your mom is a
Vampire. Vampiress!
DAVEY
Why didn't you two have another kid?
DAVID
Oh. Um, that's a good question. Your mom, and I do ahh have a
reason, but it is getting late. We can talk about it tomorrow after
you get home from school. Is that cool? Sally? When he gets home
tomorrow?
SALLY
Yeah definitely.
Davey leaves, and goes upstairs.
CONT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15.
CUT TO:
CLOSE ON David, and Sally on the sofa, they begin to kiss, when suddenly Davey comes back
down the stairs. They stop kissing, now paying attention to Davey.
DAVEY
It's not that late. I can't wait until tomorrow. Please.
SALLY
Ok sit down. When you were a few months old, one of my blood
screens was suspicious, so I went through more testing, and the
doctors found a rare cancer on my liver. They caught it early
enough before it wide spread, but I had to get the bad part
removed, that's when your dad, and I decided to wait to give you
a sibling, and time when by so fast, we just got caught up in life.
I did start thinking about having more children again, but...
DAVEY
But it came back.
SALLY
Yes, and this time I need a whole new liver. Next Monday
I'm going to get one, so no my sweet child, I'm going to be fine.
We're going to have a lot of fun at the barbecue this weekend.
DAVID
Your mom will need to take anti-rejection medicine for the rest
of her life, and if there's a world war three, and medicine becomes
scarce, then we might have a problem, but we don't borrow trouble
from tomorrow.
Sally playfully smacks David's arm.
SALLY
(smiling)
David! Don't listen to your Dad. Go to bed, get some sleep.
Grandpa JOE is going to be at the barbecue too.
Davey smiles, and goes upstairs. David, and Sally turn off the tv, then head up also.

EXT. - DAVID/SALLY'S HOUSE - DAY
We see several people in the back yard standing around conversing, drinking beer, and wine.
David is flipping burgers at the barbecue, and Rick is there next to David. Joe walks over.
RICK
You know your Mom misses you guys, I do too obviously, but
we should see him more often. Sally's a stay at home mom, have her
bring him over after school, and we're here every weekend, you
can all visit. Sally has her surgery next week?
JOE
That's right my daughter's surgery is on Monday. Rick. David.
How's business? Lot's of crazy people out there.
Sally WALKS over to the barbecue, and addresses her Dad Joe.
SALLY
Dad we don't say that. C'mon you know better.
RICK
The practice is doing good. I think David's is good too.
DAVID
Yup, doing alright, and Sally is right we don't use stigmatizing
terms, it's not professional. How's retirement treating you?
JOE
Not bad, getting in to birding lately. It helps me deal with my
gr... uh um it would be nice to have ELAINE around to go with me, she
would have loved it.
SALLY
Dad, I'll go with you. You can teach me how to use your camera.
CONT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18.
SHIRLEY comes over to join the group at the barbecue.
DAVID
Ahh yes Grandma SHIRLEY, the yearly gathering around the
barbecue is nearly complete, all we're missing is my son.
Davey! Where are you? Get on over here, and say hi to your
Grandparents.
Davey runs up out of breath from playing KICKBALL with a neighborhood friend. Davey exchanges
hello pleasantries down the line of grandparents with miss You's, and love You's. David removes
the remaining burgers, and hot dogs from the grill putting it on big plates, then takes the food
to a nearby table where the buns, and condiments are.
DAVID
Food is ready!
Everyone digs in. Some people are standing, and some are sitting while eating. Shirley, and Sally
sit near each other on lounge chairs. Rick, David, and Joe sit at a round table near the picnic table.
The side gate is open, and Jack arrives WALKING in the backyard, he walks up to the men.
JACK
Hey, David sorry I'm late. Man everything looks good.
DAVID
Jack! Glad you made it. Everyone this is Jack. And my Dad
Rick, my Dad in-law, my wife Sally is over there with my Mom
Shirley, and you've met my son Davey, he's over there playing
kickball?
JOE
When I told him you can play baseball rules, but with that rubber
ball on the ground by kicking it...well there you go, no broken
windows or baseballs going into the road.
JACK
Kickball uh? I haven't played that since... wow cool. Hi Davey!
DAVEY
Hi Jack!
JACK
I'm gonna make myself a burger, and grab a brewsky, excuse me.
CONT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19.
CUT TO:
ANGLE ON Sally, and Shirley relaxing in the lounge chairs. We see in the background ALL the guys
join in with Davey, and his friend BILLY to start a new game of KICKBALL. Fun, and laughter ensues
as David, Jack, and both Grandpa's attempt to clumsily keep up with the boys.
CUT TO:
CLOSE ON Sally, and Shirley.
SHIRLEY
How are you doing?
SALLY
Scared. Last time I only had the tumor removed, but this
time a whole transplant. I pretend to be strong in front of the
boys. You know you are the only one I would admit this to.
SHIRLEY
You're the only one I would admit this to, but
Whenever Rick senses I'm hurting, he tries to
talk to me like I'm one of his patients, that's when I give him the
look. Him of all people should know better than to do that.
Half the time when I'm ready to vent he'll just listen.
It's ok to be scared. We're here for you always.
SALLY
(smiles)
With David, he doesn't do to bad, but Dad is one up on him.
CUT TO:
The guys are still playing kickball, and the fun gets louder. Jack is pitching the big red rubber
ball to Billy, and his kick makes the ball fly right into Jack's forehead with enough force to
knock Jack off his feet, and right onto his back. A simultaneous loud audible gasp can be heard from
everyone. Billy runs around the bases, and everyone is yelling RUN! Jack retrieves the ball, and tags
Billy out before he can reach third base, and hits Billy off his feet, and onto his back. Another loud
simultaneous audible gasp from everyone. Jack, now wide eyed, and clearly worried for Billy, kneels
down to check on him. Jack shows remorse in his face, looks up at the others, and waves for help.
JACK
I'm so sorry little dude, I got caught up.
Billy rises slowly, and everyone is hovering over the scene of the accident.
BILLY
I'm ok.
CHEERS from everyone.
FADE OUT:

FADE IN:
INT. - HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY
Sally is in a bed with an IV in her wrist, The SURGEON walks in.
SURGEON
(looks at clip board in her hand)
You should be feeling nice, and relaxed. You'll be taken to the
operating room here in a few minutes. How are you doing?
SALLY
Nervous.
SURGEON
(smiles for a moment)
I'm not. The best in the world are taking care of you, sounds
cliche, but it's literally true in this case.
Two NURSES come in the room and convert the bed to be wheeled out.
NURSE
Ready?
SALLY
Yup.
CUT TO:
David, Rick, Shirley, and Joe are in the waiting room, and a Nurse approaches them.
NURSE
Sally is being taken to the O.R. right now, and the procedure
will take approximately eleven to fourteen hours, but it should be
on the faster side. Sally is in very good hands, turns out one of
the most renown specialists in the world was in town for a
conference, and was more than happy to assist when they asked
her. DR. KATHY BENOIST.
JOE
God bless the poor soul who donated their liver.
Everyone LOOKS at Joe with disapproving expressions. Joe realizes he said something inappropriate
out loud and is embarrassed. The Nurse looks at David and gives him a disapproving expression, and
walks out of the room.
DAVID
Actually, we didn't tell you and should've.
JOE
What are you talking about?
CONT.

CUT TO:
INT. - SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY
Davey, and Billy are sitting at a lunch table eating, laughing, and messing around. The cafeteria
is loud with kids everywhere, and an adult MONITOR stands by.
CLOSE ON Davey, and Billy.
BILLY
Your Dad let you drive?
DAVEY
He just let me go at idle speed, I wouldn't call it
real driving, but it was fun, I was so nervous. Don't
tell anyone.
BILLY
I've snuck my Mom's car out at night two times already.
I almost crashed the first time, and the second time I took
my brother. We took turns, then we replaced the gas with our
lawn mower gas. Don't tell on me, and I won't tell on you.
DAVEY
No problem.
BILLY
What's wrong with you? You haven't eaten your lunch.
Can I have your pizza?
DAVEY
Yeah go ahead. My Mom is in surgery today, and I'm just
stressing, I'm not hungry. My Dad told me they grew her new
liver from her own cells, and my Mom is the first in the world
to get that done, but the risk is higher so I'm really worried.
BILLY
(talking with his mouth full of pizza)
Why didn't you skip school today?
The bell RINGS to signal lunch is over, and all the kids get up noisily yelling, and chattering while
heading for the exit, the clanking of food trays against the garbage cans adding to the decibels.
Davey, and Billy file out through the door behind the others.
FADE OUT:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
22.
FADE IN:
INT. - HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM - NIGHT
David, Rick, Shirley, and Joe are sitting quietly.
JOE
It's been twelve hours. How much longer?
Surgeons DR. MCKENZIE, and Dr. Benoist walk into the room. Everyone stands in anticipation.
DR MCKENZIE
Hi David. Dr. Thompson, Mrs. Thompson, and you're her father?
Mr. Joe Riley, I'm sorry we haven't met sooner. Sally is in stable
condition, but there was a complication...
JOE
Here we go, I knew it goddammit! Why was I left out of the loop?
I should've had a say in an experimental procedure. Maybe she didn't
want me to worry, but you could've told me David. If anything
happens to her I swear to God.
RICK
Joe easy.
DAVID
(tears)
You're right Joe, I could have. I should have, and I'm so sorry.
Your daughter right or wrong didn't want you to be any more
stressed, I mean she thought with all you've been through, you
both been through.
JOE
She's right. I wouldn't have approved, and this is exactly why.
DR. MCKENZIE
Mr. Riley, this is Dr. Benoist the leading specialist in this new field
of surgery using lab grown organs from the recipient's own cells.
CONT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
23.
ANGLE ON Dr. Benoist, and Dr. McKenzie.
DR. BENOIST
Sally is stable, and doing well with her new liver. There
was a problem near the end when we were ready to close.
She had a minor seizure while her incision was still open,
and we had to act fast. She's in a medically induced coma,
so she won't be waking up when she is supposed to, but I
want to emphasize she is doing very well under the circumstances.
DR. MCKENZIE
You can all go home and get some rest. We'll be bringing her out
of the coma after a few more hours of close monitoring. That
seizure came out of nowhere, and I requested some extra tests.
David I'll call you as soon as she is awake, and I assume any time.
DAVID
Of course.
JOE
(welling tears)
Doctor, she better be ok.
Shirley reaches out to Joe, and gently places her hand on Joe's arm as an understanding gesture.
SHIRLEY
Sally is strong.
RICK
Joe, you're welcome to come over tonight if you
wouldn't mind some company. I've got some IPA's.
The surgeons WALK out of the waiting room.
JOE
Thanks Rick, appreciate the offer, but I'm going to go
home and wait. David call me no matter the time.
DAVID
Yup I will. Mom, Dad, I gotta go pick Davey up from
Billy's house. SAM, and VERA have been gracious letting
Davey hang out there.

Vera, and ADAM (Billy's brother) gather in the foyer to talk to David.
VERA
Hi David, glad to hear Sally pulled through ok. Davey
is a sweetheart, he's welcomed here any time. He's actually a
good influence on Billy. I think they're in the garage.
ADAM
God bless Mr. Thompson, praying for y'all. I was thinking
of making an appointment, I need some advice about my
girl friend she...
SAM
Adam. He's here to pick his son up, and it's been a trying day so.
ADAM
Alright Dad no prob. See ya around Mr. Thompson.
Adam, and Vera walk back into their living room, and David gestures to the garage.
DAVID
I'll go get Davey.
SAM
Oh, yeah-yeah the garage is right there.
DAVID
Thanks. And thanks again for having Davey over during
this.
SAM

predicted. She's going to be fine ok; she just needs a little
extra time.
DAVEY
I know.
DAVID
You know?
DAVEY
Grandma called and told me. I ran to the garage to cry, and Billy
followed. I told him to leave me alone until I got picked up,
but he did cheer me up so. You should've called me not grandma.
DAVID
I should've, I'm sorry son. I screwed up, but I'm glad she did.

A FEW HOURS EARLIER
We see Davey sitting on a stool near a work bench. He's crying, and sniffles can be heard. Billy
comes into the garage to check on Davey.
BILLY
Hey, you ok? Wanna talk?
DAVEY
I just want to be alone until my Dad gets here.
BILLY
let's sit in my Dad's car. You sit in the drivers seat.
DAVEY
Ok.
They get in the car.
BILLY
This is an electric car so it's a little different. I'm going to show
how to start it, and stuff so you can drive it tonight when you sneak
out, and come back over, no I'll pick you up. This car is quiet that's
why it's easy to sneak it out. I caught Adam sneaking it out once,
and he let me go and let me drive so I wouldn't narc him out.
Tonight, I'll be at your house at two a.m., we'll stay in the
neighborhood.
DAVEY
I don't know. I better not.

out from the backyard JOGGING. He gets in the Bolt on the passenger side, and they drive off.
We see a MONTAGE of them driving up, and down various streets in the neighborhood.
Laughing, pointing, and waving at houses. Billy pulls to the curb, and parks. Another car drives by.
and they duck, they come back up laughing.
BILLY
We got lucky. Your turn.
DAVEY
What time is it? We can't lose track of time.
BILLY
I don't know, I left my phone at home. You did too, right?
DAVEY
Yeah. Turn on the car. Wait, I'll get in the driver's seat first.
They switch seats. Billy points to the start button, and Davey starts the car, and reads the clock.
DAVEY
It's only been twenty minutes. Feels longer.
BILLY
Ok look first, then pull out slowly.
SMASH MOUTH'S ALL-STAR PLAYS
Davey's driving is jerky, but quickly smooths out. MONTAGE of Davey driving on various
streets in the neighborhood, they're laughing, but their smiles turn into serious expressions when
they see Police Cruiser lights turn on behind them. Coincidently Davey, and Billy are in front
of Billy's house, and Davey slowly pulls into the driveway, and Billy pushes the garage door
button, and the garage door opens. The Cop pulls in the driveway too right behind. They wait.
A radio call to the Cop comes in, and he reverses out of the driveway. Davey pulls into the garage,
parks, and the garage door comes down, and closes.

Adam opens the door from the house, STANDS in the doorway, and turns on the garage light.
Billy ducks down and pulls Davey down simultaneously.
ADAM
(semi-whispers)
Billy. Davey? You didn't. Both of you get out of there right now.
You let Davey drive? Sneaking out Dad's car - Jesus you two.
Billy, and Davey Rise up from hiding in the car seats. Davey pushes the portable garage door

We see Sally sitting upright in her hospital bed watching tv. A tube in her nose, and IV still
connected. The window curtains are open, and the rain is visible outside streaming down the glass
in mini rivers. Sally looks like she's been through it, and doing her best to be strong, and presentable.
David, and Davey walk in the room gradually as if not to spook a bird. Sally manages a nice smile,
and tears run down her cheeks. David walks around the bed to stand by her side, he holds her hand,
smiles, and tears fall down his cheeks too. Davey bursts out in an ugly tearful cry. Davey calms
himself to capture his demeanor, but tears still roll down his cheeks, he wipes his own tears with
his arm, and sniffs in the nasal drip. David, and Sally wipe their tears with Kleenex, and take in a
moment of silence while just looking fondly at each other.
DAVEY
Hi, Mom.
SALLY
(smiles)
Davey my son.
DAVID
How are you feeling?
SALLY
(points to her IV)
No pain. I miss you guys so much. I love my boys.
They had to put me in a coma on purpose, and I woke up a few
hours ago.
DAVID
Can you share some of that? None for Davey obviously, we'll
get him chocolate milk or something.
Sally, and David giggle, but it goes right over Davey's head.

A NURSE walks into their room, and a HUMANOID ROBOT with wheels for feet rolls in
autonomously behind the nurse.
NURSE
Good morning, Sally. Hi Mr. Thompson, and you must be
Davey. This is our new Robot assistant. After I check your
vitals Sally, Dr. Benoist will pay a virtual checkup through
the Robot.
DAVEY
Wow, that's cool!
The Robot wheels around the room looking in on Sally's IV connection, then turns to everyone.
Dr. Benoist's face replaces the robot's digital face and addresses the room.
BENOIST
Good morning, everyone. I'm Dr. Benoist, I led the surgery
team, and Mr. Thompson your wife has been updated on her
progress, but I'm glad I could speak with you. Apologies for
not being there in person, but I'm back in France, and Dr. McKenzie
will be in shortly to fill you in with the details. I know you were
all vaccinated for Covid, but I do still recommend wearing masks.
Even though hospitals are kept as sterile as possible, it's a breeding
ground for germs, and Sally is in a vulnerable state for the
time being.
The robot's belly opens to reveal supplies including masks, then goes to David, and Davey. The
Doctors face is replaced by a digital one.
ROBOT
Hello David. Hello Davey. Please take a mask. If there's
anything else you need just let me know. Thank you.
The robot's digital face goes back to Dr. Benoist's.
BENOIST
Sally did great even with the complication, and concerning
that Dr. McKenzie also has specific information. So, take care
Mr. Thompson, Davey. And Sally you were awesome, you
handled everything like a champ. Goodbye for now.
Davey waves goodbye smiling in amazement as only a kid would. The robot's digital face reappears.
SALLY
(smiles)
Hey, I know the robot is cool, but don't forget about me.
Dr. McKenzie WALKS in the room.

A knock at the door. Rick goes to answer, and lets Joe in. Pleasantries are exchanged.
DAVEY
Grandpa Joe did you meet Bottee?
JOE
Yeah, that thing is something else. Pretty cool.
RICK
(hands Joe a beer)
How'd it go visiting Sally today, get a chance to talk?
JOE
I was right behind you guys. She was asleep when I got there,
and I wasn't going to wake her up. She was so peaceful, and
I noticed how much she looks like ELAINE. I can't lose her too, I
would be inconsolable.
Shirley walks over to Joe and gives him a hug.
SHIRLEY
She's going to be fine.

JOE
Rick you've been to med school. What do think about the
the whole possible allergic reaction thing?
RICK
Tests came up negative for known types of Epilepsy so it
makes sense. They're going to keep her a couple extra days
just to make sure.
JOE
(slams fist on table angrily)
She could have died on that operating table Rick - goddammit!
Davey RUNS out of the room. Shirley goes after him, but David interrupts Shirley.
DAVID
Wait, I'll go.
RICK
(frustration)
But she didn't!
SHIRLEY
We're all under stress, and you two have had a few so let's
take a deep breath for a moment.
JOE
I'm so sorry. And in front of Davey too, ah man.
Can I get a cup of coffee?

We see Rick knocking on the bathroom door, and young David, (around eleven years old)
opens the door, then goes back to the sink continuing to wash his hands.
RICK
You've been in there doing that for 20 minutes. Your mom
is on the beach waiting for us. What's going on here?
What happened?
David keeps washing his hands.
DAVID
I tried picking up a dead Salamander with a stick, but when
it slipped off I caught it with my bare hands, and dropped it,
but...
CUT TO:
EXT. - BEACH FRONT MOTEL - DAY
David notices the Salamander squirm a little and realizes it's still alive. He picks it up again with his
hands while transfixed on the Salamanders plight, and struggle for survival, then walks over to a stream
near the Motel. David slowly places it in the water, and cups his hands to let the water flow over
its body. The Salamander wiggles, then springs to life.
CUT TO:
INT. - TV DEN - CONT.
Davey turns off the tv.
DAVEY
Dad, what's the point?
DAVID
I was so concerned for the Salamander that I forgot about my
OCD for a moment.
DAVEY
And that's how you learned to control it, by distracting yourself?
DAVID
No, it was a magical Salamander, and I cashed in my wish,
for your mom to be fine.
Davey smiles, then laughs, followed with David smiling. Joe walks in the room.
JOE
Davey, can I have a hug before I go.
Davey runs over to Joe and gives him a big hug.

DAVEY
Can I go with you to pick up Mom on Monday?
DAVID
Skip school? Uh.
The school bus pulls up - stops, and the doors open.
DAVEY
Dad?
DAVID
Oh. You know, sure.
Davey gets on the bus, the doors close. He sits down, and the bus drives off. They wave goodbye.
David WALKS across the street and stands at the public transit sign.

DAVID
Good. She'll be home on Monday.
JACK
That's awesome man. Thanks again for inviting me to your
barbecue last week, that was a lot of fun. Got carried away there
for a minute playing kick ball, but hey good times.
DAVID
It was thanks for coming over.
JACK
Not to get too personal, but you, ok?
DAVID
Actually Jack, no I'm not ok. I can give other people
advice as help, but I'm sinking myself.
JACK
You know what you need? A distraction from all the stress.
Let's get some peeps together and play some goddamned
kick ball! What do ya think? Sounds like some fuckin fun right?
Oh shit, almost missed your stop.
The bus pulls over at the stop in front of the business park. David WALKS off, and turns around,
and waves goodbye to Jack.
DAVID
I'll think about it. Bye Jack, see you later.
JACK
Well, alrighty then.

DAVID
Mike Meyers is great as Austen Powers, love that character.
P-ONE
What? I'm sorry is there some relevance to...uh are
you ok Mr. Thompson?
P- TWO
I keep dreaming about celebrities, this time I had a vivid one of
Jon Bernthal. We were sitting around a table eating dinner, and his
wife did some beautiful art in real time. I don't even know if he's
married, I should google that.
CUT TO:

I'm distracted by my personal life right now. Maybe we...
P - ONE
Oh. Want to talk about it?
P - TWO
(holds chin)
That is an unfortunate coincidence. So, you're an only child,
your wife is an only child, and your son is an only child.
And Sally is recovering well, I hope.
SPLIT SCREEN of both Patients from their POV

BECKY

STEVE
What's up Doc? This is unusual, my appointment is in a couple
hours. Canceled? A referral? C'mon Doc... Hiatus? Whoa ok,
but can you refer me to your dad? He's a psychologist too, right?
DAVID
Psychiatrist, he's the Doc, sure I think he has room. Yeah, you can
call me Doc, but just know... I will. Thank you for understanding.
She's doing good, she'll be home on Monday.

Dad, can I spend the night at Billy's tonight? He invited me.
Before I go let's facetime Mom.
DAVID
Whoa, I didn't say yes. Alright, but I have to talk to his parents.
I need to tell you something. I'm taking some time off from work.

RICK
David referred one of his patients to me. He knows I
don't want him to do that, but he did anyway. He took a sudden
hiatus from his practice too, I asked him for how long, and he
said he didn't know. He said he has a significant savings, and
he wanted to spend quality time with Sally, you know help her,
be there for her during the healing process. Davey too obviously,
but the signs are there.
SHIRLEY
What do mean?
RICK
Remember when he spiraled as a kid? He was around Davey's
age, and that's when we noticed his OCD. David did mention
his patients were having to wait for him, because he couldn't
get out of the bathroom, his schedule got out of sync. The signs
are there that's all I'm saying. He may not spiral, just concerned.
SHIRLEY
I'm not worried. He made it this far, ups and downs, but he has
always found a way. High school, college, marriage, Sally's
rare liver cancer after Davey was born. Why would it be any
different now? Did David ever tell you when he was little
why he thought he was OCD?
CONT.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
42.
RICK
Because he was an only child.
SHIRLEY
David didn't get a psyche degree to follow in your footsteps.
He needed to confirm his issue wasn't because he was an only child.
RICK

referral from David. Actually, he's supposed to be a hard case.

DAVID
It's too soon, and I don't...I've got a lot going on, and I'm
not looking to make new friends. Sorry Steve.
David pulls out a bottle of hand-sanitizer places it on the table and sanitizes his hands.
DAVID
Want in on this action?
Jack, and Steve get some sanitizer. The WAITRESS comes by and takes their order.
WAITRESS
Hi, drinks tonight? We also have a special on the
variety appetizer platter, it will feed y'all no problem.
CROSSFADE:
JACK
Dude, Steve is my best friend. I'm the one who sent him
to you. Sorry I didn't tell you before, but now that he's
not your patient. We started an adult Kick Ball Club, ever since
I played it at your barbecue, I've been obsessed. You gotta join!
STEVE
Believe it or not it's the best out-patient therapy, because
I can step on the bases with zero feeling of anxiety.

DAVID
Hey, how are you feeling?
SALLY
I'm ok. How are you feeling? Pretty good I bet, been
drinking out with the boys? Who with?
DAVID
Jack, and you're not going to believe it, but Steve Lee too.
Before you ask, I'll just tell you, Steve apparently is best
friends with Jack. That's how Steve heard of me. Why Jack
wasn't upfront from the beginning I'll have to ask, but it's
weird. Maybe striking up a friendship with my bus driver wasn't
the best idea. Did you talk to Davey?
SALLY
Yeah, he's excited about spending the night, more than usual.
Talk to my dad too. I guess everyone is drinking tonight. By the
way I might not come home on Monday, they're thinking about
keeping me an extra day, I won't know for sure until late Sunday.

further testing to completely rule out Epilepsy. Depends on
the-what the last results...ah, man.
RICK
Yeah, I know Sally called. Have you been drinking?
DAVID
Had a few. Davey is at a friends, and my...Jack invited me out.
You know dad I'm sorry about referring Steve Lee before talking
to you. I'll send him elsewhere.
RICK
I was upset at first, but actually no need to do that, I'm genuinely
curious about Steve.

DAVEY
Not funny. I didn't see, I was crouched down too.
BILLY
I need to get the car back in the garage, Adam is gonna
be back soon. At least ten, fifteen minutes before he gets home.
You park it in the garage. Nothing will happen it's only a few feet.
Billy, and Davey switch places. Davey starts slow and continues at idle speed. Suddenly another
car pulls up behind the Bolt, It's Adam, and he angrily leans on his horn. Davey is startled, panics,
and guns the accelerator pedal by mistake, The Bolt crashes into the left outside frame of the
garage door at high speed, and creates a loud violent sound while collapsing a portion of the front of

Joe goes into the room as Rick welcomes him.
RICK
Nice to see you, Joe. I'm glad you came, have a seat.
JOE
Thanks for making room on your schedule for me. I know you
said this isn't a typical appointment, and there's no obligation, but
I can pay for it no problem.
RICK
No, no. It's not about that, you're family, and we're all going
through it right now, but it's important we focus on you.
JOE
Before we get started can I have a hug?
RICK
Let's save that for the barbecue get togethers. Tell me what's
on your heart.
JOE
It's been seven years since Elaine died, and I miss her more than
ever. I don't know how to... I can't move on.

JOE
Do you believe in fate? Or some kind of higher power out there
in the universe influencing our lives?
RICK
I'm not religious, I follow science, and rely on empirical evidence.
Why do you ask Joe?
JOE
My dreams of Elaine are so vivid. A few days before Davey's
accident, Elaine in a dream was at the barbecue with us, and
she pointed to the kickball game, at Davey, but that Billy kid
wasn't there. I think she was trying to warn me he was
bad news.
RICK
That's a powerful dream. I'm not going to discount the possibility
that there could be something more than this world, but your
subconscious is certainly working hard for your mental well being
while you're asleep.
JOE
Back when Sally was in college, she was handing out flyers
for an 'Only Child' support group, and students laughed in her face.
David saw her from across campus to ask her if she was alright.
When do coincidences stop being a coincidence?

DAVID
It's my fault. I let you drive, and you're only eleven. I started
it, and put it in your head it was ok. I can never be mad at you
for something I gave the wrong impression about.
DAVEY
I knew it was wrong. I deserve to be punished.
DAVID
I'm just glad you're ok son.
The school bus pulls up to a stop, Davey gets on, then takes a seat. He waves goodbye from his seat

They go to the kitchen table nook, and they both start eating their cold scrambled eggs, and bacon.

SALLY

DAVID
I need to refill the tanks for the grill. Um. Want to go?
We haven't been on a date in a while.
SALLY
(smiles)
That's ok, I think I'll wait for a better date to Lowes.

SALLY
He's on Highway 101 going North on the Peninsula coast.
Rick, and Shirley look at each other.
RICK
The coast? Mmm. Ok Sally, David is spiraling, but I don't think
he's in any danger or a danger to himself. We've seen this before

This is coastal wilderness with a lot of birds.
The manager hands David his room key, and he slides her the paperwork. As David walks away,

DAVID
I know I screwed up. I'm so sorry, I was about to call you.
I said Hey SIRI, but you beat me to it. You know I love you,
and Davey more than anything. This was selfish. How's Davey
doing? I should call him.
SALLY
He cried. He's worried about you like all of us. He's at

There are some real risks with pregnancy after a transplant.
SALLY
I know, it was unplanned. I'm so sorry, it was irresponsible of me.
(welling tears)
Am I going to have to get an abortion?
DR. MCKENZIE
Fortunately, the uniqueness of the situation is in your favor, the
percentage of a normal pregnancy is higher in this case. Finish the
meds, and I'd like you to come back in for another blood screen in a
couple weeks. And congratulations.
SALLY
(cries mixed with laughter)
Ok Dr. McKenzie, thank you for everything.
There's a knock on the door.

SAM

The men are gathered at the table now, and the women head that way. Jack, ROSY, Steve, and Becky

The boys raid the table, acting loud, and obnoxious. Pleasantries, and names are exchanged between
